Irish Soda Bread is a St. Patrick’s Day favorite in my family! My mom baked this every year on March 17th…and now I make it for my family too! I’m so excited to share my Mom’s recipe with you! It’s simple, delicious and has a more cake like consistency than traditional Irish Soda Bread. It’s perfect with a little butter and a cup of coffee or served with corned beef and cabbage!
Every year I say I need to make this more than just once a year…maybe this year (now that the recipe will be easy to find on my own blog) I actually will!
Below you will find a printable recipe and my IGTV video tutorial. Hope you enjoy this with me on March 17th!
Ingredients:
- 2 cups flour
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1.5 tsp baking power
- .5 tsp baking soda
- .5 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup butter (plus extra to grease a pan)
Add the dry ingredients above to a mixing bowl and cut the 1/4 cup of butter into the flour with a pastry blender until it’s a cornmeal like consistency.
Add the flour mixture to a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment. Put the mixer on low and add:
- .5-1 cup raisin (add to your preference)
- 2 tsp caraway seeds
Next add the following and continue mixing until the dough comes together and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
- 1 egg beaten
- 2/3 cup buttermilk
Grease an 8″ cake pan with butter and press the dough into the prepared pan using a wooden spoon.
Using the back side of a butter knife, cut a “cross” into the top of the bread to allow the steam to escape.
Brush the top of the bread with a bit of milk.
Set the cake in a preheated 375 degree oven and bake for 35-40 minutes until the top is golden brown and the cake is baked through.
Serving this with a side of butter (Kerrygold in particular) and a piping hot cup of coffee is my favorite! The perfect St. Patrick’s Day breakfast.
